What AI Search Optimisation Actually Means for Queensland Businesses

July 06, 20265 min read

AI search optimisation is the practice of getting your business found, cited and recommended inside AI powered search, such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, rather than only ranking in the traditional list of blue links. It combines answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation, so that when someone asks an AI for a recommendation, your business is the one it names.

The way people find businesses is shifting from searching to asking. Instead of scanning a page of links, more people now type a full question into an AI tool and act on the answer it gives back. For a Queensland business, that raises a simple question: when an AI recommends someone in your field, is it recommending you? AI search optimisation is how you make sure the answer is yes.

What is AI search optimisation?

It is the work of making your business the answer that AI tools surface. Two related disciplines sit underneath it. Answer engine optimisation, or AEO, structures your content so an AI can lift a clear, direct answer from it. Generative engine optimisation, or GEO, builds the authority and signals that make an AI choose your business when it generates a recommendation. Together they cover the two things that matter in AI search: being understood, and being trusted enough to be named.

How is it different from traditional SEO?

Traditional SEO aims to rank your page in the list of results, where the goal is the click. AI search often has no list and no click. The AI reads across many sources, then gives one synthesised answer, sometimes citing a few of them. So the goal shifts from ranking to being cited or recommended inside that answer. Classic SEO still matters, because strong pages are more likely to be drawn on, but it is no longer the whole game. You are now optimising to be the source the AI quotes, not just a link it lists.

Why does this matter for Queensland businesses now?

Because the audience is already there. The scale and the direction of travel are clear from the platforms themselves:

The shift, by the numbers

Google AI Overviews reach around 2 billion monthly users, and Google says they now appear on roughly half of searches in the US, with other markets on the same path (Google disclosures, 2026).

Google AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly active users about a year after launch, with queries more than doubling each quarter (Google, I/O 2026).

ChatGPT reports around 800 million weekly users, so a large share of AI search now happens entirely outside Google (early 2026).

When an AI Overview appears, people click a traditional result about 8 percent of the time, versus 15 percent when it does not (Pew Research, 2025).

The click is getting rarer, but visibility inside the answer is getting more valuable. Seer Interactive found that brands cited in AI Overviews earn roughly 120 percent more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands on the same query. In other words, being named by the AI is the new front page. For a Queensland SME, this is an opening, because most local competitors have done nothing to optimise for it yet.

What do AI engines actually reward?

AI tools tend to favour content and businesses that are easy to understand and clearly credible. In practice that means:

  • Clear, direct answers to real questions, in plain language the AI can lift.

  • Genuine subject authority, shown through depth rather than thin pages.

  • Structured content and schema that spell out who you are and what you do.

  • A consistent presence across the web, including reviews, directories and third party mentions, not just your own site.

  • Fresh, current content, since recently updated pages are cited more often.

  • Strong conventional SEO underneath, because well ranked pages are still more likely to be drawn on.

How do you know if your business shows up in AI search?

You check. Ask the main tools the questions your customers would ask, such as who they would recommend in your field and area, and see whether you appear. Google Search Console now reports how often your pages surface inside AI answers, which gives you real data rather than guesswork. We cover this in our guide to the new AI visibility reports. For a quick read on where you stand, our free mini AI visibility audit checks whether your business is showing up across the main AI engines.

Where should a Queensland SME start?

Start by finding out where you stand, then fix the highest impact gaps first, usually clear answer content, schema and authority signals. If you want the deeper background, see our guides to generative engine optimisation and our SEO, GEO and AI marketing service. The businesses that move now will be the ones AI recommends by default while their competitors are still catching up.
