Protect Your Facebook Page from Trademark Scam Messages

Protect Your Facebook Page from Trademark Scams

If you manage Facebook pages, you're likely familiar with the rise in scam messages recently.

At Oceania Marketing Group, we’ve been receiving several of these messages daily and fully understand the stress and disruption they can cause a small business.

Remember, Facebook will never contact you via Messenger for official notifications. These scam messages often lead to phishing sites. If Facebook needs to serve a violation notice, they will do so via email.

Typically, these scam messages start with alarming warnings about trademark violations and the permanent deletion of your Facebook page. They may look like this:

⚠️ Important message: Your Facebook page is slated for permanent deletion due to a post that violated our trademark rights. We reached this decision after a thorough review and in accordance with our intellectual property protection policy.

Luckily, there’s a simple method to filter out these scams and prevent the disruption. Here’s how to stop these spam messages:

Set Up Automation to Filter Out Scam Messages

  1. Switch to Your Facebook Page: Ensure you're on your business Facebook Page, not your personal account. Use the new Facebook Page experience and switch into your page.

  2. Access Messenger: Click on the Messenger icon in the top right corner to open your Page’s inbox.

  3. Open Automations: Tap the automation icon (resembling an atom) at the top right of your Page Inbox.

    Open Automations in Meta

  4. Create a New Automation: Select the ‘Create Automation’ option located at the top right.

    Create a new automation

  5. Create an Automation from Scratch: Opt for the ‘+ Start from Scratch’ button to create a custom automation.

    Start automation from scratch

  6. Name Your Automation: For example, “Hide Facebook Scams” to easily identify its purpose.

  7. Choose the Channel: Set ‘Messenger’ as the communication channel for this automation. You can create a similar one for Instagram if needed.

  8. Define the Trigger Event: Under ‘When this happens’, select ‘New message received’.

  9. Set Conditions: Choose ‘Any of the following conditions’ in case you want to add more keywords later.

  10. Specify Keywords: Choose ‘Keywords’ as your condition.

  11. Enter Trigger Keywords: Input keywords used by scammers, but not by your customers (e.g., “trademark”, “infringed”, or “deletion”).

  12. Select Action: In the ‘Take this action’ section, choose ‘Mark as’ for the action and ‘Move to Spam’ for the final step.

    Select action
  13. Save Your Automation: Confirm the settings by clicking ‘Save Changes’. Congratulations, you’re done! Any messages containing those keywords will be automatically moved to the spam box.
